The University of New Mexico is New Mexico’s largest state college occupying 600 acres of Albuquerque Real Estate. UNM's programs rank high on the charts of success, many landing a spot in the top ten in the country. These include the Family Medicine and Nurse/Midwifery prgrams in the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, the Clinical Law program in the School of Law, and the Photography program within the School of Fine Arts. Many sports arenas sit in this area as well. The Isotopes Minor League team holds it's games in their mid-sized home field on the south side of UNM. The Pit, the basketball courts for UNM's teams, sits just across the street from the baseball field and attracts many fans all over the city in its season. Also in this area in the Central New Mexico Community College which has excellent facilities and programs.
The Downtown and UNM areas are under a lot of redevelopment. The housing in this area is inclusive of small, older homes, student housing rentals, many new lofts/apartments, and urban centers. This area is considered a little more expensive for it's central location to the metro center and the proximity to the university, but is close to city transportation and is so convenient.
